Career & ICC Rankings
Domestic career
Maxwell joined the Victorian squad in 2009 to play domestic cricket. In 2010, he was named “Player of the Tournament” in the Hong Kong Cricket Sixes tournament after leading Australia to a successful campaign. He was then chosen to represent the Australian Institute of Sports in the 2010 Emerging Players Tournament. In the limited-overs format, he rose to prominence as a member of the Victorian side. He then set the record for the fastest fifty in the history of Australia’s domestic one-day tournament, now known as the Marsh One-Day Cup. Later, he competed in the 2011 Emerging Players Tournament once more.
He moved to England in 2012 to play club cricket for South Wilts and domestic cricket for Hampshire. Maxwell got a national call-up as a reward for his performances this season.
International career
Because of his consistent limited-over performances in the domestic circuit, Maxwell was given an ODI and T20I debut. He had some good all-round performances for Australia, playing the jack-of-all-trades role, including a 56 against Pakistan in his second ODI. However, he remained a fringe player and was unable to cement his place in the starting lineup. However, he was selected in the squad for the 2012 World T20 in Sri Lanka on the strength of his excellent domestic form and some useful performances in international cricket, as well as his useful off-spin bowling.
Maxwell continued to impress in the limited-overs format, earning him the coveted Baggy Green for the second Test against India in Hyderabad in 2013. He didn’t impress with the bat, but he took four wickets in an inning with the ball. He was later dropped for the third Test in Mohali, where Xavier Doherty was given a chance. Following Australia’s defeat in the Mohali Test, Maxwell was given another chance in the final test in Delhi. He has dropped yet again after failing to make an impression with the bat.
Maxwell, now a regular in Australia’s limited-overs squad, continued to play the role of the quintessential bits-and-pieces cricketer. He had a slump in form near the end of 2014, but he was retained for the 2015 World Cup, with the selectors taking a huge risk. Maxwell responded in kind, scoring 324 runs at an average of 64.80 and an unprecedented strike rate of 182 in the World Cup. He continued to torment Sri Lanka, scoring 145 off 65 balls in a T20I at Pallekelle, the second-highest T20I score ever.
