ICC Career & Rankings
Domestic Career
Rahane began playing cricket when he was seven years old when his father took him to a coaching camp in Dombivli. Pravin Amre was his coach when he was 17 years old. He represented India in a U19 match against New Zealand before being selected to play in the Mohammad Nissar Trophy in Karachi. In September 2007, he made his first-class debut for Mumbai at the age of 19 against Karachi Urban. He scored 143 runs in his debut match, earning him a spot in the Irani Trophy match against the rest of India.
In the 2007-08 season, he made his Ranji Trophy debut for Mumbai. He performed admirably and was chosen to represent West Zone in the Duleep Trophy. In the second season, he scored over 1000 runs to help Mumbai win its 38th Ranji Trophy. In the following season, he scored his highest first-class score of 265 not out against Hyderabad. After scoring 1000 runs in the 2010-11 season, he went on to score 1000 runs in three straight seasons.
After being in and out of the Indian team, Rahane returned to the domestic circuit, but his form took a hit during the 2017/18 Ranji Trophy season when Mumbai failed to advance past the quarter-final stages and Rahane got his first duck in Ranji cricket since 2008.
International Career
Test Career>>
Following the retirement of legends such as VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid, Indian selectors began the process of grooming young players for the big stage. After a year of in and out of the team, and 16 months on the bench, an injury to Shikhar Dhawan earned Rahane the most coveted piece of Indian cricket apparel – Test cap number 278.
Rahane made an immediate impression during the Investec Test Series (India tour of England, 2014). On his first appearance at Lord’s, he hit a magnificent century, propelling him to the top of the honors list. Rahane’s century ensured India’s victory at Lord’s after a 28-year wait.
ODI Career>>
He made his One-Day International debut against England in Chester-le-Street, scoring 40 runs at a strike rate of 90. He did well in that series and the subsequent return series, where he scored his first 50. He did not fare well in the subsequent series against the West Indies, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. Despite being an important cog in the Test team, Rahane has been in and out of the ODI squad. He did, however, perform well enough to earn a spot in the 2015 World Cup in Australia, where he excelled in the middle order, scoring 79 against South Africa.
He was left out of the squad that traveled to England for the 2019 World Cup. Despite India’s number four batting problems and Rahane’s a stellar record in England, the selectors passed him over. His exclusion enraged many cricket pundits, and India ultimately paid the price for a shaky middle-order in the Semi-finals.
T20I Career>>
Rahane made his international debut for India in August 2011 T20 International against England at Old Trafford Cricket Ground in Manchester. He scored a half-century (61 of 49) against an England attack that included Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, and Tim Bresnan. Former Indian captain Rahul Dravid played his only T20I in this match.
IPL Career>>
Ajinkya Rahane began his career with his hometown team, the Mumbai Indians. As a rookie uncapped player at the time, Rahane did not receive many opportunities, and it was not until his switch to Rajasthan Royals that he began to show consistency in the IPL. A steady opener who can find gaps in the powerplay and then consolidate, he became a vital cog in the Royals’ batting machine. His breakthrough year in the tournament came in 2012, when he scored over 550 runs at a healthy strike rate, including his first IPL century. In fact, Rahane established himself as one of the tournament’s most consistent performers from 2012 to 2016.
Things have cooled down a little for Mumbaikars in recent years. Throughout the 2017 season, he struggled, resulting in his lowest-ever tally as a senior cricketer since 2014. The story was similar in 2018, with the additional burden of captaincy proving difficult for Rahane to bear. He opened the innings for the majority of the tournament, but with his form under scrutiny, he was moved to number three to allow the more aggressive Rahul Tripathi to partner with Jos Buttler at the top.
Because of the stability and calmness, he brings to the dugout, a performing Rahane is critical for Rajasthan. His strike rates aren’t always the best, so a slump in form only adds to Rahane’s problems. Despite being demoted to third at the tail end of the 2018 tournament, he is expected to start the 2019 season as Buttler’s opening partner. Rahane has only hit three fifties in the last two seasons, a startling statistic that reflects his poor form. This season, he’ll be looking to make amends.
