Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), an Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, has named former Indian all-rounder Sanjay Bangar as their new head coach for the next two years. He succeeds Mike Hesson, who filled in for Simon Katich, who stepped down ahead of the IPL 2021 UAE leg. Sanjay Bangar joined the RCB franchise as a batting consultant ahead of the IPL 2021. He will now take over as head coach of the RCB team, succeeding Mike Hesson. Meanwhile, Mike Hesson will continue in his primary role as director of cricket operations at the RCB. Sanjay Bangar will now have a new captain to work with after Virat Kohli stepped down as team captain at the end of the IPL 2021. Despite conflicting reports, RCB is expected to find their new captain in the upcoming mega auction.

Bangar is best known as a batting coach but has far more experience than that. “We are extremely fortunate to have Sanjay on board with us at RCB and to be able to promote him to head coach.” Mike Hesson said in a video released by RCB on its Twitter handle.
Former India Batting Coach Sanjay Bangar’s Journey
Sanjay Bangar was named to India’s Test squad for the 2001 match against England. In only his second Test match, he scored an unbeaten century against Zimbabwe. Bangar began his IPL career with the Deccan Chargers before moving on to the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2009. In 2010, he was named India-A coach before taking over as batting coach of Kochi Tuskers Kerala. Kings XI Punjab appointed him as a coach in 2014.
Bangar previously served as the Indian men’s senior team’s batting coach from 2014 to 2019. He replaces Vikram Rathour, who was replaced by Ravi Shastri after the 2019 World Cup. “I can’t wait to take this team to the next level,” Bangar says of his new role at RCB. There is a lot of work to be done with the IPL Mega Auctions and the season that follows, but I’m confident that with the continued support of the management and support staff, we can deliver the goods and bring joy to our fans all over the world. Bangar played for India in 12 Tests and 15 one-day internationals between 2001 and 2004. The 49-year-old has been part of RCB’s support staff as a batting consultant since 2008.
