Mohammed Shami began training in Moradabad at the age of fifteen, under the tutelage of Badruddin Siddique. Shami was rejected by the Uttar Pradesh U-19 team and relocated to Kolkata. In Kolkata, he began playing for the Dalhousie Cricket Club, where he was noticed by Debabrata Das, a former Assistant Secretary of the Cricket Association of Bengal. Das took Shami to the Mohun Bagan Club, where Sourav Ganguly saw him bowling and was impressed by his abilities.
